Tips for success in an online college class
Here are 10 tips to help you succeed in an online college class:
Stay Organized: Keep track of deadlines, assignments, and exams using a planner or digital calendar. In my classes I provide a downloadable day-by-day calendar detailing what is due when. Successful students will download it and follow it.
Create a Dedicated Study Space: Set up a quiet, comfortable, and distraction-free area for studying.
Manage Your Time Wisely: Break down your study sessions into manageable chunks and avoid procrastination.
Participate Actively: Engage in discussions, ask questions, and interact with your classmates and instructors.
Stay Connected: Regularly check your email and course platform for updates and announcements. I use the Announcements tab frequently and expect students to check regularly.
Take Notes: Write down key points during lectures and readings to reinforce your learning.
Seek Help When Needed: Don’t hesitate to reach out to your instructors or classmates if you’re struggling with the material. Many collegiate programs offer programs and help for mental and physical issues; take advantage of them if necessary.
Stay Motivated: Set personal goals and reward yourself for meeting them to keep your motivation high.
Practice Self-Care: Ensure you get enough sleep, eat well, and take breaks to maintain your overall well-being.
Utilize Resources: Take advantage of online resources such as tutoring services, library databases, and study groups.
Use the proper tools. Make sure you have the appropriate laptop and software for success in your online class. Most universities offer free versions of Microsoft Office and discounts on computers. Take advantage of those tools. I can tell you from experience students trying to take online courses using only their smart phone are at a real disadvantage.
Carefully read assignment instructions. Be sure to read the assignment instructions and follow them. Don't lose points for mimssing something!
